Village Beautification Project

AdJ helps to support the recycling project which was underway before AdJ was founded. For many of the Lake Atitlan villages, the “local dump” is just above the community and much of that trash washes into the lake when the rains come.  Jaibalito shares these issues and has had problems with keeping the streets clean and free of trash. Foreign residents of Jaibalito decided to take action and bring the community together in a trash clean up and recycling effort. AdJ organizes village cleanup days and educates the children about keeping the village and the lake clean. The recycling project hires local women to manage and sort the refuse left in the barrels. Every few weeks, the recycling materials are transported by boat to a remote waste management center. This project has been a huge success. AdJ contributed to the cost of building a new recycling center now located beside the children’s playground.
